The Bible sets a deliberately demanding standard when it commands us to not be overcome by evil but rather to overcome evil with good. The command to bless those who persecute us requires a diligent dependence on God to obey his word and fulfill his will. When we are filled with the word of God and the Holy Spirit, our teacher and counselor who brings the word of God to life, then we apply the truth of God’s word in our relationships with friends and foes to live in harmony with everyone.
