Although Jesus’ command in John 13:34-35 was for his disciples to love each other, the Church has often been characterized by a lack of love and deep divisions. Many of these disagreements have not been over essential doctrines but over what Paul refers to as non-essential “disputable matters.” In Romans 14, disciples of Christ are reminded that whether they are “weak” or “strong” they can act in love towards one another by faith. As Rupertus Meldenius wrote in the 17th century AD, “In essentials unity; in nonessentials, liberty; and in all things, charity.”
