“But Lord!” Moses objected. “My own people won’t listen to me anymore. How can I expect Pharaoh to listen? I’m such a clumsy speaker!” (Exodus 6:12)
This objection that Moses had about not being a skilled speaker comes up a few times early on in the book of Exodus. It seemed to be something that really caused him to stumble and that he was quite insecure about at the beginning of his journey. Interestingly enough, we don’t see this objection coming up later in the book. I believe Moses had matured. He had seen God work in mighty and miraculous ways and I think he got the point that is so crucial for all of us to also get; it’s not about us in the first place. Not our speaking, not our ministry, not our talents, gifts, or treasures. When God calls you to step out for him, it is a sign of spiritual immaturity to focus on your own adequacies or inadequacies and not see that it’s not about you at all. It’s all about Him!
I have in the past looked at the book of Exodus as being about this great leader Moses who God did miracles through and who God used to guide millions of people through a wilderness. Those things are pretty neat but that’s not what Exodus is about at all. Exodus is about a great God who sets captives free, who gives us grace even when we complain, who strengthens the weak, and provides for the needy. It’s about a holy and awesome God whose eyes are too pure to look upon evil and who cares about the suffering of His people. I now see that this book is not about Moses but about God and at the same time I understand that my life is not about me either. It’s about Him. He has been faithful when I was faithless. He has strengthened me when I was weak. He has forgiven me when I have sinned. He has protected me when I have been surrounded by circumstances that were too great for me to handle. My life, and yours, is all about God. What a great God He is!
