Chapters 12-14 of 1 Corinthians are often grouped together as a study of spiritual gifts because spiritual gifts in general and the specific gifts of tongues and prophecies are referenced in all three chapters. However, Paul’s primary focus in these passages is not on a comprehensive listing or a detailed explanation of spiritual gifts. Just as we have seen in previous chapters of 1 Corinthians, Paul is much more focused on how our gifts and our love for each other are exercised – how our gifts are used and how the presence and power of the Holy Spirit are manifest – for the common good of the body of Christ.
