The Corinthians thought that being a Christian meant that you could either indulge the flesh in every way or you had to practice ascetic self-denial and not have any sexual relations even in a marriage relationship. Paul counters these arguments but his primary purpose in this passage is not to promote celibacy over marriage or describe the conditions for divorce and remarriage. Rather, his emphasis is that because of the “present distress” believers in the Lord Jesus Christ should live their lives in undivided devotion to him even as they await his second coming.
