Paul cautions his readers to not go beyond what is written. Based on his previous references to Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Psalms it is clear that we are not to go beyond the Old Testament scriptures. However, the best understanding of Paul’s statement is that he is also referring to what we know as the New Testament scriptures. Ultimately, Paul is pointing us to Jesus, the Word of God made flesh, to remind us that it is always about Jesus and the gospel message. We are not to go beyond the Word of God.
