The believers in Corinth were claiming to be aligned with Paul, Apollos, Peter, or even Christ to support their own arguments and interpretations of the gospel message. It is not that Apollos or Peter taught them something contrary to what Paul had taught them. It was, as 2 Timothy 4:2-4 makes clear, they had not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires they were trying to find support for what their itching ears wanted to hear.
