Our image of God is very much tied up in what our earthly father was like. If he was absent, we see God as someone who isn't there for us. If he was a poor provider, then we see God as someone who doesn't meet our needs. If he tried to buy love with gifts, we might see God as Santa Claus. If he was abusive, we see God as angry and vengeful.

That last one was my father.

He wasn't always like that. When I was about 10, he had a major encounter with Jesus that completely changed his life. Prior to that, he was pretty abusive. I still flinch today when someone touches me unexpectedly because of that.

Because of that, I spent MANY years thinking I needed to earn God's love. God was angry with my sin, and I had to be good in order to please Him. As I grew in my faith, I learned that wasn't correct. I knew it, but I didn't feel it. I still lived my life as if I needed to earn His love. I was in my 30's before God revealed Himself to me in a way that I truly understood in the depths of my soul that He couldn't love me any more, or any less, than He did right then. I remember that moment vividly. It changed the course of my life.

I understood God's reckless love. It is one reason this song speaks to me so much. This link is an interview with Cory Asbury about the writing of the song. I encourage you to read it.

I also pray that you will experience that great love. If you haven't, let us know. We want to pray with you and help you!
