Last week, we talked about the first part of G.O.S.P.E.L, "God created us to be with Him."
The "O" is "Our sins separate us from God" (Genesis 3).
God created Adam and Eve for a relationship. He created the Garden of Eden and He placed them there with a mandate, "Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and subdue it. Take care of My creation." In the center of the garden, He placed two trees, the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and the Tree of Life. He gave Adam and Eve one command, "Do not eat the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil."
Why did He do this? Why not just leave out the tree?
The answer is because there is no love without obedience. Many people don;t like that, but it's true. Think about marriage. I don't "obey" my wife in the way that most people would think, but I do it nevertheless. I know her likes and dislikes. I know what makes her happy and sad. I know her dealbreakers. If I want an ongoing relationship with her, I "obey" those things. If I break her heart, it will separate us, either physically or emotionally.
Adam and Eve were very clear on God's one rule... and they broke it. They chose to break relationship with God. They walked away. We all do the same. Romans 3:23 says that, "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Everyone knows they fail. We all know we do the wrong thing. No one disputes this. Our choices to walk away from God separate us from Him.
Tune in next week for part 3!
