In following Jesus, I have been asking a lot of questions recently. Many of them are about things we Christians say so much that they have basically lost all meaning. For instance, "God is good all the time; and all the time, God is good" is something we say a lot. It is certainly true, but what do we mean when we say it?
"All we need is Jesus" is another one of thise sayings. What I would like you to do is ask yourself, "What does that mean?" What do you mean when you say, "All I need is Jesus"?
Do you mean that all we need is Jesus for salvation? That is certainly true. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life and no one comes to the Father except through Him. However, I don't think that's what people mean when they say, "All you need is Jesus."
Do you mean that all you need in this world is Jesus? There's a song that says, "Give me Jesus. Give me Jesus. You can have all this world; give me Jesus." That sounds nice. The truth, though, is you'll only live a few days without water. "All I need is Jesus, and water." You can only survive 2-3 months without food. "All I need is Jesus, water, and food." One of the most destructive things for a human is solitary confinement. It's so bad that there are laws about how long a prison can put someone in solitary. "All I need is Jesus, water, food, and relationships with people." I could go on. That's obviously not what people mean when they say that.
"All I need is Jesus." I don't know what you might be thinking about when you say that, but I invite you to think about what you really mean when you say it.
